"Gloria: The Life Of Christ, Part I"

"Gloria" is the first volume in a musical series called "The Life of Christ." It is written in oratorio form, with symphony orchestra, choir and solo voices. "Gloria" recounts musically the events surrounding the birth of Christ as those events are chronicled in the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, John and Isaiah in the King James version of the Bible. It is a literal retelling, and the words of the scriptures have not been changed, nor have any other words been added. The only difference you will find is that the libretto is organized and edited to combine the four Gospels into a single narrative.

"Variations On A Sacred Theme, Vol. 1"

"Variations on a Sacred Theme" is an example of a more serious, thoughtful style of music. In contrast to some of Lex's earlier hymn albums, which consisted of "arrangements" of hymns, these are new compositions, based on original hymn tunes. The original "hymn" is used as a starting point for the new compositions that you will hear on this album. They may be called "Serenade," "Fantasy," or "Reverie" to indicate that there is more new material written than just the theme with which you might be familiar.

In the case of "Variations on a Theme by L.D. Edwards," Lex has used a compositional device common among 18th and 19th century composers, wherein the original melody is stated close to its original form and then transformed through successive variations into a new theme. You will recognize the original theme in the composition and then hear it developed into a more expanded work.

Using solo instruments extensively throughout the album, Lex has created an intimate, expressive setting for the listener. In contrast, with full symphony orchestra and choir, Lex concludes the album with the finale piece, "Concerto on a German Theme for Piano and Orchestra."

"Variations On A Sacred Theme, Vol. 2"

"Variations on a Sacred Theme Vol. II" is another example of a more serious, thoughtful style of music. You are probably aware of the new emphasis being placed on the value of certain pieces of classical music, particularly those of Mozart, Bach and Haydn, in facilitating learning and creativity for the human mind, spirit and body. Research indicates a powerful connection between learning and music. Some have called this phenomenon "The Mozart Effect." While composing "Concerto for Piano and Orchestra on a Theme by F. Lewis," Lex had Mozart compositions playing in the background. He discovered a delightful sense of organization and clarity during the creative process for this piece.

Lex was always struck by the beauty of "A Poor Wayfaring Man of Grief," but at the same time puzzled by what seemed to be a cross in purposes; that being a melancholy lyric set to a melody in a major key. Somehow the feeling and the message didn't seem to match. He felt that a minor melody would better capture the spirit of the song, and thus, "Rhapsody on a Theme by George Coles."

Using solo instruments extensively throughout the album, Lex has created an intimate, expressive setting for the listener. In contrast, with full symphony orchestra, bagpipes and choir, Lex concludes the album with the finale piece, "Fantasy on a Scottish Folk Tune."

"Caroling, Caroling:

The Alfred Burt Christmas Collection"

The celebration of an American Christmas would not be complete without the Alfred Burt carols. Most of the fifteen carols were written as a yearly Christmas card to the family and friends of Alfred Burt.

Alfred Burt was a jazz trumpet player, the son of a minister, and a family man, who also wrote Christmas carols. What could be more American? Although he died at a very young age, he left an American Christmas legacy that continues to touch the lives of many people.

Millennium sings the Alfred Burt carols the way Al composed them. Their harmonies and SATB parts have not been altered. Some orchestral arrangements have been added to expand the beauty of the carols, but the integrity and inspiration of the composer have been carefully maintained.
